Religion on the Kthonos

On the Kthonos, religion is almost indistinguishable from what is known to us as 'mythology' in the present day and consists of regular rituals based on a belief in higher supernatural entities who are said to have created, and continue to maintain, the Kthonos and surrounding cosmos. Religion concerns itself with the spiritual aspect of the human condition, divine entities, the creation of the world, a being's place in the world, life after death, eternity, and how to escape from suffering in this life or in the next; and every nation has created its own belief in image and resemblance.

Atheism and Agnosticism does not make sense to the people of the Kthonos, as it is hard to disbelieve the presence of something when it’s manifestation is standing before you.  Most people, believe in the existence of multiple Divine entities, each of whom has a certain sphere of influence. In the course of a being’s life, they will interact with parents, siblings, teachers, friends, lovers, employers, physicians, politicians, and so on. No one single person can fill all these roles or supply all of an individual's needs. In this same way, the people of the Kthonos feel that certain Divine Entities take care of all the needs of an individual. But just as one would not go to a plumber with a sick dog, a being of the Kthonos does not entreat an entity of Judgement with a problem concerning failed crops. If a legal matter was in question, Judgement is an ideal entity to entreat, if one wanted to win at combat, an Athrôpoi might try to earn the favour of the Theme of Strength.

While this Kathenotheism (Rotational worship of one Entity at a time in a Pantheon) is also popular, as with Henotheism, (the worship of one Entity over others) They both stress the importance of not rejecting the act of respect toward the rest of the Pantheon. Avoiding such Hubris is part of the daily goals of a mortal being, for the Entities of the Divine are greatly powerful, bringing great tragedy upon those that they find disfavour with, or catastrophe upon entire civilisations. There are four main religious practices currently in Evropi; Aeonic Polytheism (also known as 'Aeonism'), the worship of the Aeons, also known as the 'Ones Above, Archenistic Monotheism, ( also known as 'Archenism') the the dyadic worship of Anthrôpos and Ekklesia,  Progenitors of the race of Anthropoi, The Teachings of the Divine Zamada (Also known as 'Zamadism') taught through the oral traditions of Katpatuka, and finally, the Mystery Cults of the Path of Xelmasis.

Basic descriptions of the Religions in our setting can be found below.

Aeonism (Aye-YON-ism)

(Aeonic Polytheism)

Main Countries of Worship:

  • Aeonia

  • Prosphoron

While Holy days and Sabbats are spread throughout the year to venerate particular Aeons, certain celebratory festivals are recognised throughout Prosphoron as culturally significant to the country as a whole. Aeonia has additional celebrations which are used as Proving grounds for those wishing to display their prowess in particular areas. Each one is dedicated to an Aeon who represents the thing being celebrated. Those who are successful in their placing at these competitive celebrations are permitted to live in the best areas of their cities, and recognised as local celebrities... Until the next time it comes around.

Archenism (ARKH-en-ism)

(Anthrôpic Monotheism)

  • Sküdra

In Archenism, the main aspiration is that Anthropos and Ekklêsia created the race of Anthrôpoi (Colloquially known as ‘Mankind’) and the Kthonos for them and their descendants to dwell upon. The four Themata, or ‘Themes’ act as walking Virtues reflecting the edicts that humanity is expected to live by. The Sküd lifestyle has evolved to incorporate these edicts into their day-to-day lives.

The Path of Xelmasis (Zel-MAH-sis)

(The Xelmastic Mysteries)

Main Country of Practice:

  • Tyritáke

The beliefs of the Tyritese are curious and well-guarded. They say there is no pantheon or god in particular that they worship, but one name appears over and over again in discussions of their beliefs: Xelmasis.

A figure of unclear origins, the amalgamation of what little has been gathered is that he rose up to become something greater than what he was intended to be, by following a different path that the one that was intended for him. It is perceived the the stones of this path were paved for all to follow who ventured into his mysteries, if only they learned to see the way. The Tyritese believe that this path is not one that can be taught, and that each must find his own. The Hatun  and family appear to be highly supportive of this endeavour; the public veneration of the Xelmasic path is shown in clauses written into constitutions and processes that allow followers of the path to skirt civil protocols under certain circumstances. To what end the Hatun is driving the populace with this folly is uncertain.

The basic maxims include:

~ How you were born does not define who you are

~ Only the Hollow Man is truly dead, even if he still walks.
~ A Path has been made for a life After life. Each must find his own.

Divinities:

  • Xelmasis, Mysterious Saviour/God

(Teachings of the Divine Zamada)

The basic maxims include:

~ Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds.

~ Though we come from different ways, we all walk one intended path in life.

~ Doing Right because it is the Right thing to do, brings beneficial rewards in many ways.
